Overseas & Underground

Alan Forrester Matthews graduated from the Camborne School of Mines in 1974 and spent the next half a century globe-trotting around the world from mine sites as far flung as Peru and Papua New Guinea. Along the way, he met a kaleidoscope of crazy characters from the God Miner in PNG, to the bodyguard from the high mountain passes of Tajikistan, to the gnarled and ancient prospector in the searing heat of the Arizona deserts.

As an alumni of Camborne School of Mines, Alan was delighted to visit King Edward Mine in June 2024 to give a lecture at the former tin mine and now a museum in Camborne.

Fellow miners and enthusiasts from all over the county came to hear Alan describe his fifty years of mining adventures all over the world.

With an eye for the quaint and curious, his lifetime of memories amuse, appal and enthral.

He’s a wonderful raconteur, also my lovely neighbour, and I’m proud to publish this fascinating memoir.
